World Community Grid Statistics Q3 2020

I was always interested in the progress of the computing power World Community Grid can use. And while the numbers are available on the Global Statistics History page, humans are not especially gifted in processing raw numbers. So I made a chart from these numbers some time ago and updated it periodically. As others might also be interested in this, I will share it here.

I intend to update the chart quarterly and post it here!

Points and Run Time

First, here is a chart how points and run time developed over the years at World Community Grid:

After a slight fall in July 2020, output increased again until the end of Q3 2020. Most likely cause should be cooler weather in the northern hemisphere. Points output (but not run time) reached a new all time high.

Run Time by Project

The second chart shows only run time, but seperately by project.

This are the noticable developments during Q3 2020:

  • OpenPandemics – COVID-19 remains the largest project with approximately 50% of World Community Grid’s computing power
  • Mapping Cancer Markers is the second largest project by output at the moment
  • Microbiome Immunity Project decreased its output slightly during the quarter. In the last week output almost disappeared, but I do not know the cause. I still receive new workunits
  • Smash Childhood Cancer was resumed again, starting in the last days of the quarter! (therefore not visible in the chart). Output is relatively small for now.
  • Africa Rainfall Project approximately doubled its output in September. While still one of the smaller projects, it cannot be considered tiny anymore with ~5% of WCG’s overall output
  • Help Stop TB continued at very slow pace
